The Russian Youth Competition “Optimist” Class Association Cup was initiated by the Russian association of this class. The competition was first held in the water area of the Neva Bay within Saint Petersburg Yacht Club in 2017 and immediately gathered an impressive list of participants. In 2018, more than 140 young athletes from a dozen of regions of Russia entered the water again, and in 2019 it was already 224 of them.
The success of the event is ensured by the high-quality organization and high status of the competitions. The Optimist Class Association Cup is one of the stages of selecting athletes for the national team for participating at the world and European championships in the Optimist class.
Due to the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) and the restrictions imposed on mass events, the regatta was held in the format of the Control Training Event (CTE). Only the best sailors came to St. Petersburg, hoping to compete for a spot in the European Championship. Despite the forced restrictions, all the participants noted the high level of organization and were extremely pleased with the results of CTE.
In 2021, the “Optimist” Class Association Cup returns in the traditional format and will once again become a key stage of selection for the Russian national team in the "Optimist" class to participate in the World and European championships.
